Rather than focusing on a single component such as single-paned windows, an old heating system, or leaky ductwork, Home Performance with ENERGY STAR offers a whole-house approach. Your Home Performance contractor assesses how improvements will deliver real energy efficiency and cost savings.

The Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Process

Step 1: The Energy Audit

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR begins with a top-to-bottom home energy audit. A specially-trained contractor using state-of-the-art equipment will look at your home's:

  • Typical problem areas such as your attic or basement
  • Heating, cooling and water heating systems
  • Utility bills from the past year*

*This data will help you understand the seasonal trends and patterns of your home's energy consumption.

The contractor will also perform a series of diagnostic tests, including:

Step 2: Improving Your Home's Energy Efficiency

After the Home Performance energy audit, your contractor will assist you in selecting improvements that will most effectively improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home.

A Home Performance contractor will then make the specified energy upgrades.

How do your home energy bills compare to the average home?

Step 3: Quality Assurance

The Maryland Home Performance Contractor will then perform a post-installation analysis to ensure that all work has been done properly. The Maryland Energy Administration may also send a Quality Assurance professional to inspect the work.

Step 4: Your Home Performance Certificate

After you have begun enjoying the benefits of your greener, more comfortable and energy-efficient home, Maryland Home Performance with ENERGY STAR will send you a certificate detailing the amount of CO2 savings you can expect from your upgrades. To qualify for the certificate the installed energy improvements must reduce your annual energy use by at least 10%.
